I know so many people, myself included, that struggle with finding happiness in the cold months of winter. I feel it’s only right (with the recent snow developments) that I show you some of the best ways to stay positive these next few months. Let’s dive into some practical and heartwarming ways to survive if not thrive this winter.
Embrace Hygge
Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish and Norwegian concept that encapsulates a cozy feeling born from comfort and togetherness. You can bring hygge into your life with hot beverages, warm lighting, a lit fireplace, cozy candles, and/or fluffy blankets. Create a space in your home that feels like a warm hug—a sanctuary from the cold where you can recharge and relax!
Practice Gratitude
As I mention in my motivational coaching, being intentional with your thoughts and expressing gratitude can shift your perspective and help you find joy in the small things when you may typically feel negatively. Start a gratitude journal, or take a moment each day (or bedtime like I do) to reflect on three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude rewires your brain to focus on the positive, making it a powerful tool for winter blues.
Stay Active
It’s tempting to hibernate in the colder months, but staying active is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. Bundle up and take a brisk walk, try yoga indoors, lock in and workout with some of your favorite tunes–whatever form of exercise excites you most. Even small bursts of movement can boost your mood by releasing endorphins and keeping you energized.
Boost Vitamin D and Sunlight Exposure
The lack of sunlight during winter can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which may affect your mood. Invest in a vitamin D supplement, or spend time outside during sunny hours to soak up natural light (Yes, sunlight is better but supplements still very effective?!). Light therapy lamps are also a great option for combating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Andrew Huberman, a neuroscience biologist at Stanford talks advocates for getting sun exposure within 30 minutes of waking for at least 10 minutes to benefit your circadian rhythm and overall well being!
Focus on Complex Carbs
While it’s easy to indulge in an excess of sugary and starchy foods during this season, these can lead to energy crashes. Instead, try prioritizing complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. They’ll keep you feeling full and energized without the dreaded sugar slump.
Create Things to Look Forward To
The winter season is filled with opportunities for joy—embrace them! Plan festive holiday activities, host cozy nights in with loved ones, or schedule a weekend getaway. Having something to anticipate can make even the darkest days feel a little brighter.
Volunteer and Give Back
‘Tis the season of giving! One of the most rewarding ways to stay positive is by giving back. Whether you volunteer at a local shelter, participate in a community project, or simply help a neighbor, acts of kindness can bring immense joy and fulfillment. Doing this with friends or family makes it even more meaningful.
Take Time for Reflection
Winter offers a unique opportunity to slow down and look inward before the New Year. If you are wanting to stay inside, use this time to journal, meditate, or spend quality moments with loved ones. Allow yourself the grace to rest and recharge as needed.
No matter how you choose to spend the colder months, remember that winter is a season for coziness, connection, and introspection. By embracing these tips, you can make the most of the season and emerge feeling happier and more refreshed. So grab a hot drink, light some candles, and let’s make this winter your coziest and most positive yet!
